If your Windows XP system screen flashes the error 0x0000006b message, while upgrading from Windows 98, Microsoft's "Knowledge base" will insist it is due to a program called Go Back from either Roxio or Symantec, and you will be given a link to Symantec, who will ask you to delete or disable GoBack. But the problem will not disappear. Remember, this can happen only when there is a software or hardware which is incompatible to XP.

You will run the Upgrade Advisor you encounter this error 0x0000006b message. Remembering that you had a Norton System Works 2000 which you have uninstalled, though you are not sure whether it had GoBack included therein. Hence you delete a "Symantec" folder before running the upgrade. You will find nothing similar to Roxio, Symantec, Norton, Live Update, etc. on the "Install/Remove" list in your Control Panel, while checking before upgrading. Microsoft support services insist that the GoBack program still remains on the system registry, and suggests removing it manually.
Usually you will be directed to a linkwhere you will be asked to scroll down to error 0x0000006b (beware, it is not 0x00000006, but 0x0000006B, only 6 zeros after the x), and then asked to click on MSDN link, but this site will also point out various causes without giving you any solution.
In such a situation it would be better to install XP afresh, to eliminate any software or hardware compatibility problems, and also get clean registry. Or, you can also have a dual boot configuration done putting XP on separate partition, having both the operating systems. But, if you desire to continue the upgrade make sure you 98 is clean, run a virus scan, spyware scan, scandisk, defrag, registry cleaner, by removing any software which you can reload later. XP hates the existing hardware and some software during upgrade. We are mentioning 98 registry because when you un-install programs, traces can remain in the registry, which may be causing the problem with upgrade.
